We started to design our architecture portfolio last year and we have to develop our portfolio in each year. This was another important part of the architectural education that we introduce our projects.
I continue to develop my portfolio this semester. I made some little changes on my previous year portfolio and I have added my new projects. I tried to make some clear and brief explanations about the aim of the project with my design strategy and supported it with several visual.
After a long working process and several critic, the second pre jury took place and we were expected to produce a 1/100 scale model with plan, section elevation drawings and reference sheet. For the second pre jury, I tried to develop my project one step further, also I studied on increasing and strengthen my references according to my design strategies. Besides, since we started to study on the programmatic organizations, the activities that are included in the library design, I tried to study much more on the spatial organizations, variety and its’ characteristics in accordance with the site conditions.
From the beginning, my design strategy has not changed that is started with the half-turn staircases of YKKS. The strategy was, located the half-turn staircases at the core of the composition with a surrounded spatial organization. According to this organization, basically, there is a three part that included different programs and this three part is seperated with an open area which the reference come from Seashore library. On the other hand, I referred to one of the sections of Seashore Library, transformed it and used in upper level of the one mass. As the result this part become an area that has the open bookshelves and above, there is an elevated platform for studying and reading. At the below part of this mass, there is a book store.
According to the other part which I referred to stacked volume condition of VitraHaus, the programmatic organization change. The VitraHaus part- two intersect volumes- is where the technological sources can be used. One of is for audio and visual media sources and other is the computer lab. Furthermore, one of the entrence from this computer lab part which also direct people to the exterior courtyard. When we pass to the other mass, the upper level is the reading and activity area of children with a more flexible area of adults. The level below is a cafe and people can reach the cafe just after pass through the special collection part. So, the other entrance is from this collection part.
I get some very valuable and positive critics in my jury that help me to develop my project further. They made various, valuable suggestions that enlightened my ideas. They also mentioned some questionable things that I have already aware. From now on, I try to solve the questionable parts, strength them and still continue to improve the strong parts.
After the first pre jury, we passed a new stage. The new case-problem- is assigned which is related with the new site conditions. In the assigned list, there are various sites in different countries with different climatic and environmental conditions. My assigned site is Mardin and according to site information the road on the north, panoramic view on the south, semi-detached house on the west and detached house on the east.
Mardin has an arid climate that summer is dry and hot, winter is cold and rainy. The main façade of the houses is the southern façade, which gets the sun light directly, and because of this, windows and doors are small. Besides, there is a gradual structure system, with mostly one or two storey houses with flat roofs.
From now on, I continue on my project while considering the climatic and environmental conditions of Mardin. I tried to change the orientation of one of the mass because of achieving the semi-detached conditions. Besides, since the both panoramic view and the façade which gets the most and direct sun light facing the same side, I have to find some solutions for that. Therefore, I continue to search to find some proper references. Additionally, I eliminated the walls of the half turn staircases and changed their directions (just to try and see what happen) to achieve more flexible condition. On the other hand, I started work on the programmatic organizations, activities which are included in the library.
